The Meyers Parrot $550.

MEYERS PARROT

Meyer’s are, indeed, little gems, light has a way of playing across their brilliant turquoise feathers, making them glow like blue topaz. But, as in the case of the Brownheaded Parrot, the stunning, iridescent plumage of this bird has to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. Photography just doesn’t do them justice.

The Meyer’s is every bit as pretty on the inside as it is on the outside. One author wrote “The Meyer’s is reputed by many to be the nicest of this very nice-to-be-around family.” Calm and steady by nature, the Meyer’s is a good choice for a homes that include children. Senegals, for example, tend to be one person birds. Meyer’s on the other hand, are likely to maintain balanced relationships with a number of people. They are unlikely to bite. It’s been my observation that Meyer’s have a certain demure quality about them that gives them a fresh and unique charm. They are sweet, but not shy. And they tend to truly like people, even strangers. One famous breeder put it this way: “Senegals loved being loved by you, but Meyer’s love loving you.”

These delightful birds have a reputation for being particularly playful. They’re great swingers and danglers, and like the Jardine’s, have a reputation for lying on their backs and doing silly things with their feet. They are, by nature, natural comics and fun to watch.

Like the rest of their kin, Meyer’s are quiet, tidy birds, and a great choice for apartment and condo dwellers (or anyone else who dislikes screaming...) Their calls are musical and pretty, and there is an exotic quality about their natural vocalizations that fascinates. They’re less likely to become good talkers than say, a Redbelly or Jardine’s, but they are likely to learn a few words, and some do develop nice repertoires.

The Meyer’s Parrot inhabits a broad band stretching across south and central Africa. They are often seen at waterholes accompanied by elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, and the usual smattering of gazelles.

All in all, Meyer’s Parrots are pleasant be around, pretty to look at, and fun to watch. The Meyer’s is a study in both stunning natural beauty, and charm. Inviting one of these little treasures into your home is like befriending a part of exotic Africa itself. Indeed, the Meyer’s’ Parrot is the Jewel of the Savannah.

Habitat: A bird that inhabits the moist woodland areas and the edges of the savannah like the Senegal Its diet is also similar, being made up of seeds, nuts, berries and cultivated grain.

Blue Crown Conure - $575.

BLUE CROWN CONURE

Blue Crown Conures (Aratinga acuticaudata) are in the Artinga family of Conures. Other common names are the Sharp Tailed Conure or the Blue Headed Conure. There are 2 other sub-species; Aratinga haemorrhous and Aratinga neumanni.

The natural range of Blue Crown Conures extends to several countries in South America that include: Columbia, eastern and south west Brazil, Venezuela, northern Bolivia, Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay. In there native habitat Blue Crown's have been known to allow humans to get quite close. Life expectancy is approximately 30-40 years.

They are one of the larger species of Conures weighing between 150-180 grams. Length from head to tail is appx. 14.5 inches. Coloring is predominately green , with pale olive under the wings. The head, including the forehead, crown, lores, ear coverts and cheeks are dull royal blue. The eyes are surrounded by a bare white patch of skin and the iris is reddish-orange. The upper wing coverts are chestnut-brown, and the tail is green while the lateral tail feather are brownish red with golden olive tips. The upper mandible is horn colored with a black, sharply pointed tip and the lower mandible is solid black. The legs are pinkish grey. Juvenile birds have less of the blue coloration on the head and the mandible is completely horn colored. Although they are not one of the more colorful species of parrot, they more than make up for it with their endearing personality. The Blue-crowned Conure is a favorite among many conure lovers. These lovely birds are affectionate, smart, playful and a joy to be around.

As to pet quality, Blue Crowns are exceptional. They are quite friendly, calm, playful, inquisitive, and affectionate. Biting is usually not a problem with the lovable Blue Crowns. They tend to be less nippy than other species of parrots. They can speak with a certain amount of clarity, and they can learn to speak a number of different words and/or phrases. Their intelligence enables them to learn quickly and they can be taught to perform several tricks, such as: sticking out their tongue, waving their foot, kissing, etc. Head scratching and feather preening are a must for a pet Blue Crown. These highly social birds thrive with daily attention. In turn, they will reward you with their companionship.

Instinctively They like to lay on their backs and play with their feet. They also enjoy hanging from the cage bars by one toe, swinging from their toys. My pairs prefer to sleep hanging in the corners of their cage, or in a sleep box (a sleep box is similar to a nestbox except is has a larger door and plenty of peep holes that provide more light than a nestbox). As with any parrot, especially Aratinga conures, expect a certain of screaming. If a certain amount of screaming would be disruptive to your household, then DO NOT PURCHASE A PARROT! Screaming is a natural part of bird communication. They will call to the other members of the flock, and as a parrot owner, you are part of his/her flock.

Feeding Your Blue Crown a varied diet will contribute to longevity and health. Offer a daily portion of a high quality pellet such as: Hagen, Roudybush, or Harrisons. A daily serving of fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, pasta, and/or bird bread is a must. Fruit seems to be a special favorite among Blue Crowns, especially grapes. My pairs will fill up on the fruits and leave the veggies, so I limit the amount of fruit and I hide it in the bottom of the dish. I also like to serve them a warm mash made up of dark green leafy greens, squash, corn, beans, and other seasonal vegetables and fruits. A small amount of seed or nuts can be offered. Fresh water should be given each day. Blue Crown's love to bathe in their water dish so I prefer to use water bottles.

Parrotlets $150.

PARROTLET

Many different species of Parrots come from South America. The brilliantly colored large Macaws share much of the same regions with the Parrotlet, the tiniest of all parrots. Parrotlets range from the foothills along the west coast of Mexico to the southernmost parts of Brazil, and from the east coast to the west coast of South America. This small fearless bird belongs in the Genus called Forpus.

When you think of a Parrotlet, think of a tiny Amazon with the heart of the Gladiator, the playful antics of a circus clown and the determination of a worker bee. They don't require a lot of space, they can be kept in an apartment without fear of problems with your neighbors. I've even known of a few college students that kept a Parrotlet in their college dorms. One of the nicest things about a Parrotlet is that they don't scream like larger parrots. Males will sometimes sing a very pleasant song, especially when courting a female.

Parrotlets can be a good starter bird for novices wishing to go on to keeping and breeding larger birds. Another bonus is the fact that all Forpus Parrotlets are sexually dimorphic. This means that the sex of the bird can be determined by visual observation. Setting up breeding pairs is easy to do and doesn't require surgical or genetic sexing. There are new color mutations of Parrotlets being developed which makes breeding these little jewels very exciting!

Parrotlets are capable of talking, although their ability is somewhat limited. With patience and perseverance, a young Parrotlet may learn to say several words, whistle, and repeat sounds.

A Parrotlet may live to be 20 years old if cared for properly giving its family many years of enjoyment. If you like a bold confident type of bird that is also impish and entertaining, a Parrotlet is your type of bird.
